Our latest books (Caplan, 1989; Caplan & Caplan, 1993) have described activities and the techniques and conceptual models we pioneered to fulfil our preventive mission. Scholars in the history of science have noticed that the progression of ideas about the physical world in the history of science is remarkably like the progression of ideas about the physical world held by children. For example, young children believe that the world is flat, as did many scientists in ancient times. As a result, constructivist scholars in science education have tended to focus on conceptual change, acknowledging that scientific understandings may always be under construction or open to reconstruction.
