The interpretation above given of the language used of circumcision seems to me to be incontrovertible. THE ANTECEDENTS OF CHRISTIAN BAPTISM 31 theology were given a fresh orientation and greater depth and power by the Christian understanding of the redemptive action of the Messiah. 1 Our discussion of the relationships between Jewish proselyte baptism and Christian baptism has not been wholly negative, for it has yielded some important data. If we have been compelled to stress the uncertainty attaching to the date of the emergence of proselyte baptism we have yet recognized the probability of its priority in time over Christian baptism.

It should be noted that G. F. Moore, like Daube, also divorced proselyte baptism from levitical cleansing, though from a different viewpoint, (Judaitm, vol. I, pp. 332 ff) and BUchler could not find proof of the idea of purification of sin by immersion in first century Jewish writers: "There is no evidence for the assumption that the immersion prescribed for the proselyte was instituted to wash off symbolically his numerous sins', op. , p. 373. This united testimony of Rabbinic experts deserves more consideration than it has thus far received.
