He would be hammering the door in, his hoarse bark bouncing admonishments off the rafters. She threw it open to face Klaus Lindegren, an infectious smile up-tilting the corners of his handsome mouth. He sketched a bow and extended his arms toward her. She went into them with a sigh of relief, not giving a thought to the impropriety of the embrace. It was clinical, after all, meant to put her at ease. She wasn't prepared for the firestorm of emotions that washed over her in those strong arms, however.

The carriage horses had begun to mill and prance and complain. Both drivers were hard-pressed to control them, until a third carriage, carrying toward the skirmish from the south, forced the issue. The baron's coupe swerved and bolted. Its left wheels on the road, its right gouging a trench in the soft shoulder alongside, it skirted the confrontation and disappeared around the bend, splattering the other two coaches with the mud of its hasty departure. Klaus's gave a sign of relief. He waited while the other drivers got their carriages back on course and went their separate ways, then left the window.
