He reviewed Under Western Eyes 20 A Conrad Companion in the Manchester Guardian on 11 October 1911, and in November 1912 published an appreciation of Conrad's work in Rhythm. Conrad was greatly pleased with the latter and expressed a wish to meet him; the meeting took place before the end of 1912 and the two men became close friends. Curle's Joseph Conrad: a Study (1914) was the first full-length study of Conrad's work and was written with his approval. ' Curle later published The Last Twelve Years ofJoseph Conrad ( 1928) and Joseph Conrad and his Characters (1957).

On 24 August 1897 he wrote: 'the Nigger isyour book and besides you know very well I daren' t make any move without your knowledge'. Responding to Garnett's favourable review of The Secret Agent in October 1907, he wrote: 'Twelve years now -just a round dozen my dear - since I hear your voice in my ear as I put aside each written page.
